The city was originally founded in 1861 and named after its founder, Joshua Cowell. A lot of the townspeople wanted both the town and the train station to have the same name. A Cowell Station already existed in San Joaquin county, so Cowell's name was ruled out. Monteca was chosen ultimately, but when officials went to file the paperwork, a mistake was made.
