Drinking Water for Manteca Elementary School

As a result of a $21253 technical assistance grant from the State Water Resources Control Board's Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund, Nile Garden Elementary School will receive safe water thanks to the consolidation of the school into the public water system of the City of Manteca.

A federally-funded organization known as Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC) provides technical support to the City of Manteca in compliance with the city's Construction Financing Agreement for the consolidation of Nile Garden School with the city's water system. In addition to overseeing the submission of deliverables, RCAC assists with billing and quarterly reporting as well as engaging schools and the community in this project. As part of RCAC's assistance, the city recently hired Wood Rogers as its engineering firm.

The Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund will provide $47 million additional funding, along with $300,000 from the Department of Water Resources Proposition 84 grant program. This the City will be able to install approximately 6500 feet of transmission lines, as well as a new groundwater well, and an arsenic treatment system. By using the technical assistance grant, the City will also provide public updates on the project.

For its drinking water needs, Manteca Nile Garden Elementary School relies on one groundwater well in the City of Manteca. As well as arsenic, the well has repeatedly exceeded the maximum contaminant levels for 12,3-trichloropropane in groundwater. By completing this project, the school will be able to mitigate these issues and provide safe drinking water to students and faculty.

It is important for the city and Manteca Unified School District to work together to realize the benefits of this project.

Nile Garden Well 30 Project is expected to begin implementation in the Manteca Unified School District soon, said Joan Arnold, Facilities and Operations Department Supervisor. The project provides the school with an essential potable water source to operate on a continuous basis. Further modernizing the school and improving the health of the surrounding community are also vital to this project. State and Municipal partners are essential to the development of the project. MUSD values their support.

Elba Mijango, Associate Engineer from City of Manteca, also recognizes the value of this project: The City of Manteca is happy to be working with the State Water Board and the Manteca Unified School District on the Nile Garden Well 30 Project because it will provide drinking water to Nile Garden Elementary School and add another water source to our community. Until this project is complete, the City staff looks forward to collaborating with the community and working together to accomplish it.
